UTI

Sometimes the symptoms of UTIs will go away with time, but it doesn’t mean that the infection is gone. If you leave UTIs untreated, they could cause further health problems.

While UTIs can be triggered by sex, they are not sexually transmitted, and can happen even if you’re not sexually active.

For a list of sexually transmitted infections, please click here.

What Is It?

UTIs are most often infections of the bladder.

How Do I Know If I Have It?

The most common symptoms of a UTI are:

  • Burning when you pee
  • Having to pee really bad but only a little comes out
  • Feeling like you have to pee all the time
  • Cloudy or foul-smelling pee
  • Blood in your pee

If you have any of the following, you may need to go to the emergency room:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Back or side pain
  • Nausea and vomiting

How Can I Avoid Getting One?

  • Drink lots of water or cranberry juice (100% cranberry juice, not cran-apple or cran-grape juice) or take cranberry extract tablets
  • Pee a lot throughout the day.
  • Pee before and after sex (or any kind of genital stimulation).
