Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)

Sometimes the symptoms of BV will go away with time, but it doesn’t mean that the infection is gone. If you leave BV untreated, it could cause further health problems.

While BV can be triggered by sex, they are not sexually transmitted, and can happen even if you’re not sexually active.

For a list of sexually transmitted infections, please click here.

What Is It?

BV is an infection that occurs when the normal balance in your vagina is thrown out of whack and a certain type of bacteria that normally lives in the vagina starts to multiply at a higher rate than usual.

How Do I Know If I Have It?

You may have BV if:

  • Your vaginal discharge smells bad or fishy.
  • The color of your vaginal discharge is different than normal (mikly white or grey).
  • Your vaginal area is itchy, burning and/or swollen.
