I missed my period, what should I do now?

Make an appointment with DCYHC’s Pregnancy Care Coordinator by calling (650) 985-7000. The Care Coordinator will help you through the whole process of getting tested and making decisions once you find out your test results.

What can I expect when I arrive?

New clients will fill out paperwork that’ll help us to take the best care of you we can. All forms you fill out are confidential, so don’t be afraid to be honest!

After you fill out paperwork, you’ll pee in a cup and we’ll test your pee to see if you’re pregnant.

We’ll also test your pee for STIs (gonorrhea and chlamydia) if you’re new to DCYHC, have a new partner since the last time you were here, or have been with your same partner for more than 6 months.

If you’re pregnant, we’ll tell you right away and talk with you about your options. We’ll call you in 3–5 days if you have an STI because that’s how long it takes for the test results to come back. If you don’t have an STI, you won’t hear from us at all.

What if I am also having burning when I pee, the urge to pee even when I don’t have to, blood in my pee, and am peeing more frequently?

If you are having symptoms that resemble a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) we will have you do a special type of urine test along with the pregnancy test.

What if I am having discharge from my vagina that is different than usual in amount, color or odor?

What if my pregnancy test is negative?

If your test is negative, but you have had unprotected sex or a condom break within the last 120 hours (5 days) we will offer you the morning after pill (Plan B, or emergency contraception).

If your test is negative and you have not had sex within the last 120 hours (5 days), we will offer you condoms and a prescription for Plan B to use if needed in the future.

What do I do if my test is positive?

We will talk about which of your options—keeping the baby, adoption, or abortion—is best for you. Regardless of your choice, we will encourage you to sign up for “Medi-Cal” which will pay for pre-natal care and delivery or an abortion. You can also use your own health insurance if you choose.

I can’t have a baby right now and don’t want to go through a pregnancy, do I have an option?

Yes, you can choose to terminate your pregnancy, which is also known as an abortion. The two clinics we most commonly refer our clients to for this confidential service is Choice Medical Group and Planned Parenthood. You can also use your own insurance, if it covers this service, as well.

Is terminating a pregnancy safe?

Yes. In fact, when they’re done in the first trimester (first 12 weeks) of pregnancy, abortions are about 11 times safer than giving birth.

Keep in mind that some of your choices may be limited by time. Our pregnancy coordinator or one of our counselors can help you if you are having a hard time making a decision. Counseling is a safe and confidential way to explore the positive and negative aspects of parenting or ending a pregnancy.
